Workers

The Atlantic Immigration Program is a partnership between the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Atlantic Immigration Program lets Atlantic employers hire qualified candidates for jobs that they haven’t been able to fill locally.

Candidates can be living abroad or be in Canada temporarily, but must have a job offer from or must be employed by a designated employer before applying.

Are you a candidate for the Atlantic Immigration Program?

If you and the employer meet the program requirements, you and your eligible dependents will receive permanent resident status, and can live and work in Canada.  For more information on the steps you need to follow, please see Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada.

Public Advisory: Employers Invited to Meet Labour Demand Through New Atlantic Immigration Program

  • Immigration, Population Growth and Skills

Employers looking to meet their labour demand are strongly encouraged to become designated for the new Atlantic Immigration Program. Since launching in 2017, the now permanent program has benefited 310 employers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Employers are required to become designated in order to take part in the new program, regardless of prior use and familiarity with the pilot program.

To become designated, employers must:

  • Seek to hire full-time, non-seasonal international applicants, who will work a minimum of 30 hours each week. If you have an existing employee you wish to support in obtaining their permanent residency, they would need to be employed in a full-time, non-seasonal position, working a minimum 30 hours per week;
  • Have a business that has been in continuous, active operation under the same management for at least two years in the Atlantic Region and in good standing (see guidelines for more details);
  • Agree to and demonstrate a commitment to maintain a welcoming workplace;
  • Commit to supporting the candidate’s and their accompanying family members’ access to settlement services; and
  • Understand and agree to the reporting requirements for the program.

Employers will also be required to complete free training offered by the Government of Canada. For full program details, and to sign up for the training, visit here.

The Provincial Government is also hosting information sessions on the new Atlantic Immigration Program for employers and prospective newcomers. For more information, go to Employer Information Sessions and Prospective Newcomer Information Sessions.
